In a Business to Business Marketing Strategy, the ‘Big Wait’ is a Costly Mistake

On one hand, a properly selected, well-conceived business to business marketing strategy is the key to a company’s growth and expansion. For many companies that have been struggling, or are stalled, implementing a marketing solution that will generate leads and sales is Priority One. So, why is it that such a decision is often put off with some form of we think we will wait? Another Look At Christianity

Christianity is a monotheistic religion centered on Jesus of Nazareth, known by Christians as Jesus Christ and the New Testament accounts for his life, teachings and actions. With an estimated 2.1 billion adherents, Christianity is the worlds largest religion. Its origins are intertwined with Judaism, with which it shares much sacred text and early history; specifically, it shares the Hebrew Bible, known as the Old Testament. Christianity is considered an Abrahamic religion, along with Judaism and Islam. Although Christianity in and of itself is profoundly directed towards peace, brotherhood, and salvation, its historical record, on a number of issues provides ample source for an understanding of the folly of man. Many an evil act has been propagated in the name of Christianity. Justice Ameer Ali [1849 1928] writes about Christianity: It found slavery a recognised institution of the empire; it adopted the system without any endeavour to mitigate its baneful character, or promise its gradual abolition, or to improve the status of slaves. Under the civil law, slaves were mere chattels. They remained so under the Christian domination. Slavery had flourished among the Romans from the earliest times. The slaves whether of native or foreign birth, whether acquired by war or purchase, were regarded simply as chattels. Their masters possessed the power of life and death over them. Christianity had failed utterly in abolishing slavery or alleviating its evil. This double standard or item of interpretation was not exclusive to the issue of slavery with respect to Christianity. This article is not an attempt to discredit the religion, but to point out atrocities that were perpetrated in the name of God- as was put In the Name of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. As soon as Christianity was made legal in 315, more and more pagan temples were destroyed by one Christian mob or the other. Examples will show that in the name of Christ, man had very little appetite for tolerance, brotherly love or understanding of things different. The world famous female philosopher Hypatia of Alexandria was torn to pieces with glass fragments whilst in a church by a Christian mob led by a Christian Minister in 415. In 782 Emperor Karl [Charlemagne] had 4500 Saxons who were unwilling to convert to Christianity beheaded- an action taken in the name of Christ. 5 000 to 11 000 peasants were slaughtered on May 27, 1234 in Steding [Germany] simply because they were unwilling to pay church taxes. John Huss, a critic of Papal infallibility and indulgences was burnt at the stake in 1415. University Professor B Hubmaier was burnt at the stake in Vienna [1538] and Giordano Bruno, a Dominican Monk, after having been incarcerated for seven years was burnt at the stake for heresy on February 17, 1600 in Campo dei Fiori [Rome]. About 20 000 Huguenots were killed in 1572 France on the command of Pope Pius V. In all the aforementioned instances, the individuals were murdered for having a different belief in religion, and in life. In the 17th century, Catholics sacked the city of Magdeburg [Germany] killing 30 000 protestants. In a single church, fifty women were found beheaded reported poet Friedrich Schiller, and infants still sucking the breasts of their lifeless mothers. Also in the 17th century, Catholics killed Gaspard de Coligny, a Protestant leader. After murdering him, the Catholic mob mutilated his body, cutting off his head, his hands, his genitals and then dumped him into the river but, then, deciding that it was not worthy of being food for the fish, they hauled him out again and dragged what was leftto the gallows of Montfaulcon, to be meat and carrion for maggots and crows. Christianity was also used to propagate hate against the Jews. In the 4th and 5th centuries, synagogues were burnt by Christians with an unknown number of Jews slain. The first synagogue to be burnt was near the river Euphrat on the command of the Bishop of Kallinikon in 388. In essence, Jews were slain across Europe on the command of the Church for centuries. There is little wonder that hate for the Jews resonated in the hearts of many during the reign of Hitler. The Spaniards found pleasure in performing all kinds of odd cruelties on the natives of the New World. They built a long gibbet [a structure used for execution by hanging], long enough for the toes to touch the ground to prevent strangulation and hanged 13 natives at a time in honour of Christ Our Lord and Saviour and the twelve Apostles. Then, straw was wrapped around their torn bodies and they were burnt alive. A total of more than 150 million natives were destroyed in the New World between the period 1500 to 1900. Two thirds met their deaths because of small pox and some 50 million by direct violence. This is what Christianity did to the New World! Surprisingly, few know that Nazi extermination camps during World War II were by no means the only ones in Europe. In the years 1941 to 1945, there existed numerous extermination camps in Croatia run by Catholic Ustasha under their dictators Ante Pavelic, a practising Catholic and regular visitor to the then Pope. There were even concentration camps exclusively for children. In the camps- the most notorious was Jasenovac, was headed by a Franciscan Friar. Orthodox Christians Serbains and quite a substantial number of Jews [500 000 700 000] were murdered at these camps. The original intent of Christianity was to evangelize the world. However, man has taken this crusade to include as acceptable murder, intolerance and hate. The past has shown us that many have used Christianity to discriminate against Arabs, Jews, and Blacks and today, we see the same hate targeted at other groups in society. I am a Christian, and I believe that my God is a loving God; all his children created equally and in his image. Unfortunately, there are those who profess his glory yet indulge in activities that are not Christian-like. The point being- never follow anything blindly. Ask questions, find the answers if one is to truly understand his/her purpose. Three Ways to Invest Time + Money In PR

By Kelly O’Brien In my recent interview with Buzz Medias Elizabeth Pereira and Fritz Chaleff, we discussed the basics of these not-so-basic approaches. Read on for how to get lots of attention for your story, using these wise investments of your time and money. Kelly: When should people consider PR in their marketing efforts? Elizabeth: PR should be included in every marketing plan you developfrom the very beginning of a new product being launched or a policy coming out. Use it heavily in the beginning to establish a brand, then level out over time. Its also a good tool for handling crisis down the road. For consumer-related messages, PR really builds credibility quickly 40-50% of your budget isnt unreasonable. Fritz: The traditional view is that product marketing should go with ads, not PRand that issues and position-related launches should use op-eds and PR. But I see it as actually the oppositefor example a good story on NPR will do more than, say, ads. Think of PR to launch a brand, and advertising to maintain it. Kelly: What advice to you have for someone just learning about PR for their business or organization? Fritz: PR is a process its not a one-time hit or magic bullet. Just like networking or in social experiences, it takes time to develop trust and credibility. So just one press release in a vacuum wont do it. This is really a cornerstone. One thing that really helps is planning even if its a year outyou need to be thinking about it now. Actually, you really need to be thinking and talking internally about it all the time. All of your employees are diplomats and ambassadors of your company. So all the internal communications need to be aligned, with policies on if or how to talk with the press, the general publictalking points are key, as is training. Protect your brand by getting everyone on the same page. Kelly: So whats the one thing you wish your clients would do that would make it easier for you to help them in their publicity efforts? Elizabeth: Bring us into the planning process early on. Often, clients will sit down at the beginning of the year when they get their budget and plan, but dont include their PR team until much later. You need to think through angles and pitches early on and be thinking strategicallynot just about tactics. Fritz: Then theres the media schedule if you want to do big pushes in February, realize that youre competing with the Super Bowl, Grammys and Oscars. Even if youre local and on a smaller scale, theres an annual cycle that you need to take into consideration. Elizabeth: There are things you should plan around, unless you can relate your topic to these things. Fritz: The other thing is for clients to understand the difference between the story and how its pitched. We had a client who shot themselves in the foot by not allowing us to let the media ask them about a particularly hot topic its got to be about what the public wants, not what you necessarily want to say. Kelly: So what should a small company budget for PR if they want to build a regional presence? Fritz: Thats a great questionand again, it depends on whom youre trying to reach. You need to look at the scope of what you want to do. Whats your dream list, and then scale it back and budget realistically. Come up with smart PR dollars, and dont waste your investment. So television interviews may not be needed, when radio will be more effective. Kelly: Lets talk about radio in a minute. But first, what are SMTs and VNRs…and why are they beneficial to PR campaigns? Fritz: A Video News Release (VNR) is a pre-packaged news segment. It looks like anything youd see on local news with a reporter in the field, a voiceover, and its edited just like news. You then send that to any newsroom and they can pop it in, just like any news piece. So instead of the station having to come out and cover your story, youre saving them the expense and time. News production has become so much more expensive and producer workload has tripledso this really makes sense because youre making their life easier, as long as its a balanced piece. You can even do a specific style for a specific network. The SMT is a Satellite Media Tour. This is doing a series of interviews in a studio, with a satellite uplink that connects to any affiliate in the country, with a reporter doing 2-3 minute interviews. Youll hit one- to two-dozen markets in a couple of hours, which would have cost you far more in travel, lodging, downtime, etc. Smaller companies dont tend to go this way (theres a cost of entry starting at about $12k), but once you figure out what it can do for you on a national scope, the dollars make sense. You can also use it for local and regional markets, targeting only those audiences you want to reach. Elizabeth: Yes, if you want to launch something within a state (for example, a new mass transit system in a region), its much more efficient. Local elected officials may not have time to run around to every station in their market, but will have time to go to one studio for an hour or two, and talk to eight different local or regional stations. Kelly: Okay back to radio. How can radio boost awareness about PR campaigns? Elizabeth: Radio is a great option for clients with smaller budgets. Its also good to mix in with SMTs. Radio is a different audience they tend to be captive and in the car. There are many different types of programs that are very targeted, so its easier to reach a specific audience. Radio is also a lot cheaper costs about 50% of SMTs and has a lot of credibilityits really a big up and coming tool. Again, you need plenty of lead-time for radio, although its less complicated than TV. We recommend 4-6 weeks of lead-time, to help with targeting and messaging. And sometimes radio is better because its not a visual story. Fritz: With radio, you can get so specific on your demographic targetso the more you know about your target audience, you can really focus how to spend your dollars. Kelly: Do you have an opinion on the difference in effectiveness between a straight radio interview vs. an editorial-based audio news release? Elizabeth: I prefer radio media tours better, because you can attach a persons name to a story and interact with the anchorand connect better with the audience to build trust. Kelly: Do you have a specific PR success story you’d like to share? Elizabeth: We did a satellite media tour for the National Museum of the American Indian. The launch was a huge successwe had 21 interviews lined up for the Museum Director that turned into 91 airings nationwide. One place where we really helped was in targeting the radio stations many we found were on Native American reservations. Kelly: So how should people think about success what are the metrics we should consider for PR? Elizabeth: It really depends on what your goal is: to increase public awareness? to increase museum visits? to sell more books? So we provide statistics on airtimeand encode our broadcasts to see how long they lastand then compare that to ad dollars. Advertisement usually ends up being far more expensive that what they invested for the tour, not to mention the difference in credibility you get from PR vs. ads. Every trade show exhibit has the potential of having some sort of a multi media show inside its trade show booth. It can be as simple as a Power Point presentation on a 17 monitor run from a laptop, to a much more elaborately produced multi media presentation shown on a giant screen.
