A Sudden Career Change Overview
Thursday, January 31st, 2008By Don Monteith It may seem like the “end of the world” to you, especially after you’ve given EVERYTHING to your employer. Today, you’ve been terminated and it feels like a Mack truck has just run over your body without a thought or care. Did they have a security guard “watch” you clean out your desk andshut-down your computer? After a few years or more, it’s one of thosedemeaning experiences with BIG employers….. some even provide escort service to your car. Regardless of the years, it’s not a good, warm fuzzy feeling for any of us. With that behind us…. let’s begin to think about “reality” and how itmay just be your BEST day. I know, you’re seeing a DARK cloud hoveringoverhead, but it will soon go away, I promise. Been there and know exactly how it feels to you. Even Vegas causes some of us to see the”black cloud” before we can get out of town. Since I don’t know your talents, skills, history, ethics, etc…. I’m kindain the dark too…. but for argument sake, we’ll assume that you’re a verygood person with lots to offer any “smart” employer. With that in mind, you can believe that good will come of this cloudy day. Let me share a story with you, because when you’ve been there, seenthe dark cloud, it’s a feeling long remembered to help anyone willing tolisten and learn…. it’s happened to more folks than just YOU and me. Yes, your emotions are responding; you may even be embarrassed to beoutside looking in…. that too will pass. Maybe a little financial stress hasshown it’s ugly head in this mess. There’s anger; frustration; depressionis also known to surface; yet, it’s still NOT the end. There’s an old saying, at least it’s one of mine that I like…. “you’re now in SALES, so put on your RED COAT and get moving today!” Let the world know that you’ve got the “goods” and someone better come soonand discover the value in “this” awesome package of energy. For the record, almost everyone changes their career path several times in the course of a working career. It’s just part of LIFE, only we prefer todecide ourselves when that should happen, not our employer. We call it”down-sizing”; “right-sizing”; names don’t matter, you’ve been terminatedand our goal is to make that a good thing on your behalf. We’re going to make your former employer take notice. They’re goingto realize their loss sooner than expected. For you, it’s dust off the dirtand never look back. One day you’ll send them a “thank you” note fordoing you the favor of making a career change. You’ll find loads of information on the Internet, but a major problem is sorting out to find helpful resources. You don’t have time to merely sit and read, focus is the key. A new million dollar idea surfaces on the neteveryday, you just don’t have time to try them all. Ending thought - learn from those who can help you. Don’t get bogged down in spending time with trivia, or useless stuff. Search out the ones who are known to successfully provide good advice from their experience in the field of staffing and career placement.
