How To Ace An Interview: Planner And Check List

Friday, February 15th, 2008

By JoAnn Hines The interview is a very important part of the job search process. It is, however, only part of the process. The first step of the interview is to prepare for the interview. The key to a successful interview is advance preparation. Solidifying yourself as the best candidate comes after the interview. This interview planner covers the three stages of a successful interview before, during and after. Before the Interview You should not go into an interview without preparing for it. It is important to anticipate what the interviewer will ask and expect. The more prepared, poised and confident you are the smoother the interview will go. Create a job shopping list. Determine what would be the ideal job. This should be your wish list of your expectations. Don’t sell yourself short or reduce your expectations to fit a particular job. Prepare your interview portfolio- include current company literature, current job description (if similar), personal compensation history, extra resumes, references (peers, employers, subordinates, clients, vendors, etc), actual letters of reference, performance appraisals, memos/letters confirming achievements, college or continuing education transcripts, articles written by or about you, text of speeches you have given, non-proprietary designs, drawings and reports you have developed, press releases detailing awards you have won, testimonials about you. Set up a separate file for each company with whom you interview. Then you can customize accordingly the materials to be presented accordingly. Prepare and study an interview cheat sheet. List the key elements you wish to discuss. Note key points and questions about the company. Research the company, industry and the product or service they offer. Keep key facts or points fresh in your mind to utilize in the interview. Know the company philosophy. Prepare a list of questions to ask the interviewer. Study these carefully and prepare your answers accordingly. They interviewer WILL ask if you have any questions. Make them good ones. Allow your questions to give them more insight into your fit for the job. Prepare a list of questions you expect the interviewer to ask you. Have a friend do a dry run interview. Test your answers. Sit still and think give answers that present you best. If there are any questionable areas in your background, you need to be well prepared to answer these confidently and with conviction. Do not be defensive. Purchase correspondence stationery and thank you notes. Have these ready to go for the post interview stage. Identify your basic interview wardrobe and select an outfit (and back up) that is considered fairly conservative for your field. Consider your accessories carefully, no flashy jewelry or outlandish ties. Its always better to err on the conservative side. Polish your shoes. Get the heels replaced if necessary. Make sure to wear appropriate business shoes. If expected to visit the plant or manufacturing facilities, check on the shoe regulations and bring and extra pair. This also helps you to look well prepared and efficient. Get a manicure and haircut. Call the assistant or secretary to confirm your appointment. Confirm the address and directions. Know where you are going in advance. If you are unfamiliar with the location, consider a dry run (especially if its during peak traffic times.) Get a good nights sleep. Day of the Interview What to take: Take your portfolio and extra resumes. Take the name(s) of the person(s) with whom you are meeting with as well as the assistant you spoke with previously. Take a comb, tissues, emery board and breath mints. If necessary take an extra pair of reading glasses. Take a few pens, a tablet and business cards. Take an appointment book to record follow up interviews and prevent over-booking. TIP: Don’t schedule one interview after another. Interviewing is an exhaustive process you will want time to rejuvenate in between appointments. What to Do Be calm. Dont stress or panic. Be confident and remember your preparation. Get organized. Call the assistant or secretary to confirm your appointment with X. Confirm the address and directions. Check your materials. Put everything in one small briefcase or professional folder. Leave yourself plenty of time to get there. Plan to arrive early. Before you check in visit the washroom. Let the receptionist know you are there and take a seat. Mentally review your assets. Smile. Shake hands firmly. Go get em! After the Interview Send a thank you note immediately. Reinforce your attributes. Make sure you sell yourself again. Keep track of all career related written and verbal correspondence. Set each up contact in a separate file. Make yourself available. Ensure you can be reached at the number(s), fax and email you listed. Note: Make sure these numbers are not your current place of employment. If you do not hear from the potential new employer within one week, follow up. Make a phone call to inquire about the position. Ask how far along they are in the decision making process and reiterate your interest. If you do not get the position, send another letter of thanks and ask that they keep you in consideration for any other comparable openings. Not sure how to get started branding yourself? I can help. I branded myself from anonymity to world class speaker and expert. I make it simple for you too with easy to use workbooks and tutorials. Wake Me When It’s Over

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

By Dawn Brown A few months ago a new client called me to make an appointment. She had just been through a very painful separation. We talked about what she was experiencing and the healing process. It was clear that time was needed as the ending of the relationship had done what endings normally do stir up painful memories of other endings. So she was not only grieving the loss of this relationship but other losses in her life as well. She wanted to rush through the process, skip the hurts; do something to make the pain go away. In desperation she asked me if I did hypnotherapy. I then asked her if she had been hoping that I would put her to sleep and then wake her up later with the pain all gone. She laughed and replied, Yes, something like that. Would that life were that easy! Whenever were healing, whether its a broken heart, a battered ego, or a broken bone, we have to allow the healing to take place. I remember breaking my toe years ago. The physical pain was bad enough but I really went through a hard time as I had to give up my dance lessons and the various forms of exercises that I had enjoyed. After 4 months I asked my doctor if I could resume my lessons as I felt fine. He assured me that doing so would compromise the healing and that I needed to wait a bit longer. It is challenging to allow the healing process to be. We want quick and easy answers and reassurances that life will be as it was. Think about swimming and the undertow. We are advised to stay calm, float with it and then allow the surface current to bring us back to shore. Fighting against it tires us out and results in certain death. We may feel were doing something about it but thats not what is needed at this time. That is the same way busyness can create the illusion of movement and hide the fact that were stuck or sinking. I heard a joke years ago about a woman whose car had broken down and the person in the car behind her kept beeping his horn. She got out of her car and instructed him to start her car while she sat in his car and beeped the horn! Weve all seen people who punch the elevator button several times (creating the illusion of control and doing something). The elevator closes in its own time. Now doing nothing about a situation doesnt mean that we sit, watch and do nothing! Life is a paradox. So while were doing nothing about the situation, we may be doing an infinite number of other things: practicing self-care, seeing friends, taking classes, seeing a therapist, reading books, helping someone else, learning a new skill, allowing living things plants or animals in our life, exercising and before we know it, time has gone by and when we check, the intensity of the pain has lessened. We find our perception has shifted, were in better physical shape, weve created harmony in our environment, weve opened our hearts to others, were laughing more, and weve done nothing and everything to healing ourselves! For Second Weddings Only - Eight Tips

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

By Tom Downward Planning a second wedding? Prevent favorite guests comparing your second wedding, to the first wedding. It isn’t tricky but it will take some thought. Whether guests will or will not compare weddings is likely to be determined by the brides status. Yes, it may be hypocritical, but for wedding planning; if it is the brides first wedding, she often can have as elaborate a wedding as she pleases. She can use all the traditional clothes and customs because it just doesnt matter that it is the grooms second wedding. But if it is the brides second wedding you are planning, there are limitations in the minds of many guests. These things should be known and they can be dealt with in a constructive, reliable way. Here are eight useful tips. To start lets make a guest list. Go get your essentials first. You know, pencil, paper and a “cuppa tea”. Put your head together and give this some focused thought. Prepare to visualise the ceremony. Hang out the “Do Not Disturb unless you have cash” sign. Now you’re ready. 1. Pare down the guest list to the ceremony itself. This list must include members of the families and very close friends of the couple. That pretty much means parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts, siblings, godparents and just your closest friends. 2. The bride should avoid the full length gown and veil. Wear a bridal gown that is quite formal, of course, and three quarters length or even street length but no veil. The Bridal Bouquet is always appropriate. 3. Everyone has a wedding cake. That is always proper for second weddings. However, throwing the bouquet, wearing the garter and throwing rice arent. 4. The reception can be as elaborate, exuberant and even wild as you wish. It makes no difference who is getting married for the second time. 5. Do not invite socially sensitive guests such as former in-laws and former spouses. If the children are at the wedding you can invite the grandparents. But that leads us to another point. 6. Get the former spouses approval before you invite the children and let the children decide how they feel about attending the wedding. 7. They can participate too. It makes them feel wanted and needed. Children age 7 or 8 can be in charge of the guestbook or pass the cake, while older children, say 13 or 14 can be an attendant if they are fully aware of the significance of the occasion. 8. Realize, some guests being invited to a second wedding gave generous gifts at the time of the first wedding. Some of these people may or may not be attending this time, for whatever the reason. But they may still send a small gift and a note. This serves mainly as a symbol that they approve, for which you can be grateful. It certainly deserves a thank you note. In summary; You will think of more ways to address this potential wedding planning problem. But these tips can be relied upon to work and to point you in the direction you most want. So, dont discard them too quickly. May you have a very happy Wedding Day. You know, the memory will last your lifetime. Making Jewelry for Fun

Monday, February 11th, 2008

By Mike McDonough Jewelry making today is much simpler than most people think. Anyone can do it. This is a hobby where you can use your creativity to create unique and one of a kind pieces of jewelry you can wear and showcase daily. There are many types of jewelry making techniques that dont require welding or other advanced techniques. You can make beautiful, one of a kind pieces through assembling beads, stones, pearls and crystals with basic jewelry materials known as findings. Pliers are used extensively to cut, bend, and manipulate the findings to assemble a piece of jewelry. Findings include clasps, connectors, ear wires, jump rings, and many others. Jewelry can be made from specific designs or from custom layouts of beads and other elements. Some of the basic techniques include stringing and knotting, bead weaving, and wire wrapping. Stringing is the most basic technique where beads, pendants, crystals or stones are threaded onto a thread or cord. Knot or crimps are typically placed between them to separate the pieces. Bead weaving is where smaller beads are threaded and interlaced to make intricate designs. Wire wrapping is where wire itself is wrapped to become the jewelry elements. Wire can also be combined with beads and other elements to form unique pieces. You can even make your own findings with wire. A variety of different threads/wires/cords, findings and stringing elements (beads, pearls, stones, or crystals) are made from different materials and come in different shapes, sizes, and colors. These variations and the way in which they are used within the piece make up the basic elements of a piece design. Materials range in prices due to their materials and their quality. Most simple findings are a base metal and dipped in silver, gold, or nickel. More expensive ones may be pure gold or other metals. The threads/wires/cords, findings and stringing elements are typically included with different project ideas; you can also experiment with different items to create your unique jewelry designs. Most hobby and craft stores carry all the supplies and tools you will need to get started in this fun filled craft. Spend a little time researching the type of jewelry you would like make and then purchase the tools you need to complete the task. Do not skimp on the tools. The tools used by crafters of jewelry make completing your project much easier and the finished project looks professional. Have fun and enjoy making jewelry. It is always a great feeling when someone asks where did you get those earrings? and you can say I made them myself. Approx. equipment costs: About $20-$50 for basic equipment Approx. costs per project: $10 and up for basic beading projects - depends on size, types of materials, and quality of findings Difficulty for beginners: Easy Approx. time to complete project: basic projects take less than an hour Types of Projects: Earrings, necklaces, bracelets, anklets, eyeglass cords, etc. Mike McDonough is and avid hobbyist. How Fish Finders Work?

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

By Andrei Loskoutov A Fish Finder is a subset of a group of instrumentscalled sonars. A Sonar consists of a transmitter, transducer, receiver and display. In the simplest terms, an electrical impulse from a transmitter is converted into a sound wave by the transducerand sent into the water. When this wave strikes an object, it rebounds. This echo strikes the transducer, which converts it back into an electric signal, which is amplified by the receiver and sent to the display. Since the speed of sound in water is constant (approximately 4800 feet per second),the time lapse between the transmitted signal and the received echo can be measured and the distance to the object determined. This process repeats itself many timesper second. DISPLAY:The display shows a history of the received echoes. The user can make a number of adjustments to tailor the display to his or her preference, such as senitivity, the depth range and chart speed. Displays use a variety of technologies, provide different resolutions and number of shades of gray or color. Each display is made up of a number of pixels, which are little square blocks that make up the images. The more pixels and shades of gray or color the better resolution and image clarity. Fish Targets:Echoes from fish within the beam will be shown on the display by illuminated pixels. What image appears on the display depends on a number of factors: the sensitivity setting on the fishfinder, the cone angle of the transducer, the speed of the boat, and the size, depth, speed and direction of the fish. A fish that is swimming directly beneath the boat, it will create a consistent echo that will cause a continuous lineto appear on the display. A stationary fish caught in a narrow beam transducer appearsas a single point on the screen as the boat passes above it, whereas under the same conditions the fish appears as an arch if a wide beam transducer is used. Why American Women Don’t Like Asian Girls?

Saturday, February 9th, 2008

By Dao Jones Any man who has dated Asian girls who live in the United States, has witness the wrath, jealously and prejudice of American women towards Asian girls. I know I have, as have many of my friends. The stereotypical has some merit: American women cant compete against the Asians sexuality, American women feel threaten and some American women simply think Asians are stealing their men. These all bear some truth. My experience is first hand. I dated many Asian girls and have heard the comments. If we frequent a typical American club, I have had my dates threaten by American women in the restroom. In time, Asian clubs sprung up in the United States. At an Asian club, American women are welcome. I have never seen an American lady being threaten by Asians in a typical Asian club. It just isnt their nature. The crowd in these clubs are usually Asian girls and American men. There are many Asian girls in the U.S., especially from the Philippines. A lot of these girls arrived via meeting an American G.I. I really dont know the percentage, but there is no doubt that most Filipina girls have a military connection in some way. They met in the Philippines, got married, and came to the United States with their military husband. Consequently, youll meet Asian girls in clubs who are married. If you mingle with Asian girls that frequent the clubs for any length of time, you will eventually meet ladies who are unfaithful. This unfaithfulness is how Filipina girls are branded as whores by American women. This doesnt carry the same stigma for American women who may do the same. Hypocrisy is always evident when behaviors of the two cultures are compared. What the American GI has discovered is now catching on with non-military men. Asian dating sites have sprung up all over the internet. Some of these sites try to exploit the Asians sexuality. However, there are many Asian girls who want to meet a sincere gentlemen for a relationship. As attractive as Asian girls may be, American men are also captivated by the Asians behavior towards men. A mans dream of having a wife who wants to please him, appreciates his love and treasures his efforts in making a home seems to have been found by American men in the Asian culture. Youll hear American men call these values traditional values because at one time these were the values that held the American family together. The tired argument about these women being a servant to their husband, is one sided. Do these women like serving their husband? Yes, most do. But not as slaves. They are not forced to do so, but have the desire to please their man out of appreciation and love. These girls are doing what they want to do. I repeat, they WANT to please their man, do things for him and show their appreciation. In turn, these men are happy, want to provide for their wife and have no desire to look elsewhere for this appreciation. Its chemistry that once prevailed many years ago in the United States and has been lost in the myriad of women rights in American society. Why do Filipina women want to marry a foreigner from another country? Im not going to argue the fact that these ladies want a better life. Its probably true. I will argue that most women, no matter the country, want to marry in to a better life. Again, it is the hypocrisy of who you are that makes a behavior negative or not. Most women, in the United States, need to look in a mirror before judging ladies from other cultures. Besides wanting a better life, most Asian ladies want better treatment. In a Filipina ladys eyes, men from the West treat women better then men from their country. Is there truth to this? The feed back I get from the ladies at my website is yes or at least they perceive it to be so. Im sure the social status of your family makes a difference of how you are treated regardless of your gender, but Im talking about the average Filipina girl. The difference is simple. In her country what she does for her man or husband is expected without appreciation. Here in the United States, most men come to expect a lady isnt required to serve him, to want to please him, and love him for who he is. When an Asian girl does, his appreciation is certain. For an Asian lady, the man doesnt have to be super rich or look like a movie star, just treat her well and show his love. Its a merry-go-round with respect and love as its focal point. She wants to please him, he loves her for pleasing him, she loves him for showing he appreciates her love and so on. All the above words, statements and my observations have their exceptions. There is no doubt, there are bad men in every country. There is no doubt that some women only are in it for the money or to get a free pass to the United States. These are the exceptions and it is this minority that the media and others will use to blanket a whole culture in a negative light. Im sure most of you have seen in print or on the news about mail order bride scandals or mail order bride mistreatment as if this defines all courtships and marriages that develop through the internet. If a few instances defines the standards, then just getting a marriage license in the United States should have a warning imprinted in gold. No matter if a couple met through the internet or at the neighborhood church, you have your share of scandals and mistreatment. The last culture of experts that needs to be giving advise about how to meet and marry a women is the United States is there any other country whose divorce rate is higher? The Philippines does not condone online dating sites. For that matter, it is against the law. Im not going to quote their law here, but it has to do with moral issues. Again hypocrisy!. If the Philippines are so worried about women rights, there are other issues they could concentrate on besides taking away a womens right to find happiness, love and a better life for herself. She wouldnt be looking elsewhere, if the Philippine government took care of her needs. Should I complain? Probably not, or most Filipina women would not be joining online dating sites to meet American men. My objection to this law is how it is used in the Philippines as a political vehicle rather then sincere concern for womens rights. Hypocrisy, it is everywhere, isnt it? I started this article to comment on why a lot of American women despise Asian girls. Not all American women, but a lot. But the discrimination doesnt stop there. It is evident in the media, politics and indeed in their own country. The people who are forgotten, are the couples themselves. Why not just ask them? If two people who found each other are happy, in love and want to be together, why does the media and politician think they know better. More then likely, it isnt about what the couple want, but more about politics and sensationalism to sell news. Take your hatred, your narrow minded views and negative publicity elsewhere and let us find love even if we find it on the internet. Tip on Losing Weight - 7 “Secret” Rapid Fatloss Tips That You Would Pay To know!

Friday, February 8th, 2008

By Paulo Ilustre There are a lot of tips out there that help you lose weight but only a few of them will actually make you a fat burning machine 24/7. You see, the idea here is to keep burning the fat off even when you leave the gym. Whether you are in the office working, at home watching tv, or sleeping, you can burn fat! The theory behind it is maximizing your body’s metabolism. Having a higher metabolism throughout the day will make your body burn more energy 24/7. When this happens, it becomes easier for you to create that deficit between the calories you burn during the day and the calories that you eat. When you increase your metabolism while maintaining the number of calories you eat, you create a calorie deficit that is conducive to lose weight! Here are 7 tips that will help you become a lean fat burning machine! Using a tip on losing weight a day into your daily life will help build that body you want in no time. 1. Commitment Okay, this is the most underestimated tip in your arsenal. You can have all the programs, all the pills, all the supplements that promise you that flat stomach or 6-pack abs and still you can look like a slob because you tried the program for 3 months, saw some progress, called yourself “boy/girl fatloss” and started binging again in front of your TV. Commitment to the program and to your ideal body is very important. Unless you are truly committed to the goal at hand, you will never get anywhere near that 6 pack or flat stomach. 2. Be ready to make a sacrifice Simply put, if you’re not willing to pay the price: working out, eating the right food, etc. You will not make the cut and say goodbye to your fatloss hopes and dreams. 3. Do HIIT Cardio! This cardio program is modelled after a sprinter’s training program. Have you ever seen a sprinter without a flat stomach or a 6 pack? You can also see that they are significantly more muscular and better looking than their marathon runner counterparts? This is so because HIIT cardio spikes up the body’s metabolism into INSANE levels without eating a lot of energy that can reduce your muscle gains. There are a lot of versions of HIIT Cardio but the one I use personally is this. Sprint - 30 seconds - Rest 30 seconds Do that for 4 minutes on your first 3 sessions and try to add a minute each session until you reach 12. Let me warn you: if this is your first time to do this you can last 4 minutes and didn’t break a sweat then you’re probably doing it wrong. When I say sprint, you go all out until you “shake like a leaf”. Up the INTENSITY. This program alone will turn your body into a fat burning furnace! 4. Make sure to eat and eat well! You know, fat loss doesn’t have to equate to starving. If you starve, the more chances you binge in the long run. Do not deplete yourself of energy!!! But don’t eat too much either. Maintain the balance, eat 6 times a day of clean food (no Mcdonalds, etc.) 5. Keep yourself Hydrated What does water have to do with burning fat? EVERYTHING. Almost every process in the body involves water. When you don’t hydrate yourself properly, metabolic processes in your body SLOW DOWN. This is bad news for you if you’re trying to burn fat!!! 6. Eat a lot of Greens! Fiber rich foods not only clean your digestive tract but they also are more dense in the stomach. You satiate more quickly when you include a lot of greens/salads in your diet. When you do this, you reduce your chances of binging on junk food and the like! 7. Treat yourself! These tips put a lot of strain to your body. Don’t forget to treat yourself from time to time. Buy yourself a new shirt, shoes, or ice cream! (just don’t do it often) It will be easier for you to be committed to your goal if you reward yourself from time to time. Remember your Psychology101, positive-reinforcement! So there they are your 7 tips to fitness! Hope you find them useful! Did you like the tips? More of them in this program here! Make the Most of Your Peel Off Stickers

Friday, February 8th, 2008

By Teresa Patchett Don’t you find it maddening when you peel an outline sticker from the sheet and notice that the bits left behind also make a great picture, if only you could peel them and put them in the right place to recreate the picture. Well now you can. All you need to do is stick a piece of masking tape onto the remaining pieces then peel it carefully to lift the pieces from the backing sheet. PLace the image where you would like it, then rub vary hard onto the back of the masking tape. The image should stick to your project allowing you to remove the masking tape. So to make a beautiful card with a butterfly outline sticker. Select an A5 piece of Coloured card, fold it in half. Select a piece of background medium in a matching colour and mount this onto the front of your card. Then simply peel the Butterfly and place on your card, you can then colour the wing sections in different colours to great effect. You can then use the above method to add a second butterfly shape from the middles of your first butterfly. To finish your card you could add a plain paper insert and a matching C6 envelope. How to Roll New Business Your Way with Promotional Merchandise

Thursday, February 7th, 2008

By Andrei Smith According to Wikipedia, the free internet encyclopedia: “A promotional item is merchandise given away free of charge to the public in an effort to promote a business or increase interest in, or sales of, a product. These items are also referred to by the slang terms schwag and tchotchke. (The latter is derived from a Yiddish word meaning “trinket”.) Promotional items are also used in politics to promote candidates and causes. Examples of promotional items include logo-branded t-shirts, caps, keychains, bumper stickers , pens, mints, etc. Collection of certain types of promotional items is a popular hobby.” Promotional items have the power to be understood universally. According to the Promotional Products Association International, corporations spend close to $17.5 billion a year on this type of advertising - that’s more than one-third of what’s spent on TV. A survey conducted for Promotional Products Association International (PPAI) by LJ Market Research reveals the power of promotional products by measuring how end users respond to organizations that use promotional products as part of their marketing mix. The survey, Promotional Products - Impact, Exposure and Influence: A Survey of Business Travelers at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport , was conducted by interviewing business travelers at DFW Airport. More than 71 percent of travelers indicated they had received at least one promotional product in the last 12 months. The study also showed that respondents’ ability to recall the name of an advertiser on a promotional product they had received (76 percent) was much better than their ability to recall the name of an advertiser from a print publication they had read in the past week (53.5 percent). Recipients of promotional products do remember the advertiser’s name. Business to business gifts are a good way to maintain a positive presence within your client base. They can build brand awareness within the professional community as well as amongst the general public. The next time you launch a new product or service, try introducing it with an imprinted business item. When gifting to clients within your industry, it is particularly important to choose a promotional item that relates to your field. For example, if your new service will save the public time and effort, introduce it with a customized clock or calendar. By introducing a new product or service to clients with a clever business gift, you maintain a strong industry awareness of your company. It is also important to choose a quality method on the imprinted business items. Stick to laser engraved pens, debossed leather and vinyl items, and embroidered wearables. Break away from the promotional item pack. People tend to copy each other and assume that if most people do things a certain way, its the way to follow. Dont follow, be a leader instead. People love pens, but the truth is, everyone of us has at least a dozen promotional pens right now with different company names and logos inscribed on them, and if yours is one of them, the next person most likely couldn’t find it to call you if she searched all day and night. But if she had, say, a branded clock or a branded calculator on her desk, with your name and address on it, well, that she could definitely put her eyes and hands on - which means she would be able to call you. Bottom line, don’t be afraid to do something different. Do a quick research, see what’s trendy, look for novelties. If your budget permits, get something people will not throw away, like a USB flash pen, a promotional MP3 player, an imprinted watch, etc. Try to deliver your promotional products in different, creative ways. For instance, instead of mailing 1,000 mouse pads with your company logo on them, have 300 or so hand delivered. Hand delivering promo items will earn you enough business so that you can afford to hand deliver the next 300 and so on. Let the professionals handle it. Hire someone specialized to advise you and develop your promotions and promotional ideas for you. Let a design company create your promotion and print it for you. Yes, you’ll spend a little more money upfront, but you’ll have a promotion where all the pieces and parts work together to get your message and call to action across to your customers - which means your customers will be more likely to call you instead of the other guy. Remember that there is more to an effective promotion than handing out one item. There are pieces and parts to it. It takes a consumer an average of six to seven times of seeing and/or hearing your promotional message before they get it and take action of any kind - even saying “no thank you”. No, it’s not because your target audience is dumb, it is because they’re constantly being bombarded with marketing promotions from all sorts of businesses. Know your target audience. If your promotion is for teens and young adults, for example, don’t give them refrigerator magnets-they don’t usually have refrigerators! At least not of their own yet. Give them a cool key chain or CD holder, give them something electronic, something trendy and colorful. If your target audience is leaders of corporate America, don’t give them lottery scratchers or highlighter keychains, don’t even give them a calculator, since they have accountants dealing with their numbers. Give them instead a nice writing set for their desks, give them some nice executive accessory that you know they will not be ashamed to display on their mahogany desks. And if you are really on a budget, a nice luggage tag, a passport holder with your company name, logo and address, or even a promotional golf ball will do. No matter how wonderful and unique a promotional item is, if it’s given to the wrong target audience that has no use for it, they will have no use for you. —Andrei co-owns Bsleek - a company that specializes in web design, hosting, promotional items, printing, tradeshow displays, logos, CD presentations, SEO and more. Life - At the Workplace

Friday, February 1st, 2008

By Teow Aun Chew People of lower positions need to keep a grateful heart at all times, while people of higher positions must always give their care and loving hearts to those in lower positions. Only then the higher and the lower can link together into one breath and there would be no friction among them. Only then the world can become perfect. Only then the distance between people can be lessened gradually, and people can merge or unite themselves into a joyous harmony. In life, we each play many different roles at home. At the workplace, never allow our personal emotions to carelessly come in which is inappropriate for all the reasons you may imagine. No matter how many big corporations called themselves as “big families” it is truly difficult to tolerate workers who bring their personal frustrations or opinions into the workplace. Learn to leave your troubles at the door and don’t bring them in. People who bring emotional baggage into the workplace can be temperamental, grasping and neglectful. Even more frustrating is that they can act out of all their pent-up, misplaced emotions on the job without consideration for others. Employees and co-workers react to this, work efforts and results go by the wayside, and profit and productivity go down. Take a break if you must and know that you are at the workplace to provide results. Heal yourself first, determine your values, then you will be a better employee, manager or business owner. Nowadays it is very difficult to find good workers. Surprisingly, a female Muslim employer in Malaysia prefers to employ Chinese devotees of Tao of Heaven because she said, “Employees that come from the Tao of Heaven Temple are very disciplined and reliable.” Let me quote a teaching from my Heavenly teacher JiGong so as to be a better person where we can apply at the workplace: “Instead of demanding others, demand oneself in every aspect. It doesn’t matter if we make mistakes, but the important thing is we can correct them. In correcting mistake, we can realize why and what we need to correct. To realize something in depth, one must demand oneself. To blame oneself with the same heart we blame others and to forgive others with the same heart we forgive oneself. It is always easy to know others, but it is hard to know oneself. It is easy to forgive the wrongs of oneself but it is hard to spare the faults of others. People can see things that are a hundred steps away, but it is hard to see the back of one’s body. The eyes can observe things as tiny as the autumn-hair, but it is hard to count one’s eyelashes.” When someone points one finger at others for faults done, little did one know, three fingers are pointing back at oneself. Man must be man enough at whatever role to uphold his responsibilities at the workplace and do not blame others for his own faults. Only then, harmony will prevail and the Golden Rule is: “Do unto others as you would want them to do unto you.” Author: T.A Chew Website: http://www.white-sun.com T.A Chew, an accountant by profession, had been working for people and doing his own business for more than 25 years.
